1.7 Is It Stupid to Believe We Exist by Love?

A Christian View on Dignity and Identity

We are still on a very fundamental level here — and that’s on purpose. It’s better to have a ground to build on than to talk a lot without foundation. The topic of the blog is identity, from both a psychological and a faith perspective. To understand psychology, though, it helps to have a solid anthropological foundation. Otherwise, talking about the essence of a human being doesn’t make much sense. Psychology can cover a lot — but mostly in a describing way. Faith can give a reason to it all.

You can also believe in evolution (which is not contradictory to believing in God) without asking why. But in Christian faith, the intelligence behind nature and evolution, the intelligence that made all the laws, is God. (Book recommendation: Para salvarte by Jorge Loring — I haven’t found it in English, unfortunately.)

And this intelligence is not cold or distant. He is love itself. 🤍

God IS Love

Created by Love

“The root reason for human dignity lies in man's call to communion with God. From the very circumstance of his origin man is already invited to converse with God. For man would not exist were he not created by God’s love and constantly preserved by it; and he cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and devotes himself to His Creator.”
(Gaudium et Spes, 19)

God is the eternal Father with perfect will and intellect.

Let me paint a very simple picture: Kids — when they have done something or found something they think is great — are so proud. They immediately want to tell their mom or dad. They want to share the goodness they encountered or created.

God is one essence but also tripersonal (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). And He wants to extend this love.
Not because He needs us — but because love naturally overflows. 🌊
My existence is not necessary, nor is yours. God doesn’t need us. (hint: but he can work through us)

God’s love is overflowing.

Meaning for Our Lives

If we start to acknowledge that our beginning lies in God, it suddenly gives direction to everything else. It brings order and priorities into our lives.

  • Our relationship with God
If we come from God, then this relationship is the first and most important one — because it is also our destiny.

  • Our relationship with ourselves
Something shifts here. We are worthy. We have dignity. We have purpose. And we are made good — because we were made in the image and likeness of God.

  • Our relationship with others
Others carry the same value. They are not “less than” or “in the way.” We can be light to them — and start seeing them as brothers and sisters. ✨

Everything changes with God in the center.

Three Action Steps (Choose One)

Honestly, this can feel hard. Even unrealistic. We want to fix everything at once — our relationships, our habits, our thoughts. And that’s usually where we get stuck.

The key is not to do everything.
The key is to focus on one thing.

And if we focus on the core, everything else can flow from there.
As we already said: the core is God.

So here are three simple options — choose one:

  1. Start internal conversations with God
It doesn’t have to be fancy. It can literally sound like:
“Hey God… I don’t even know what I’m doing, but here I am.”

  2. Go to adoration
Sit with Jesus, face to face. Start talking. Or don’t.
It requires faith — yes — but every real relationship does.

  3. Read the daily Gospel
For example, on the Vatican website or through a daily Gospel app.
Just let the words sit with you.

And this God is not neutral or distant. He is love itself.
